Tasting Notes

This vintage had all the elements of a classic Napa Valley vintage, and for many, it offered redemption from the devastation of 2020. Throughout harvest, Thomas was very impressed with the colour and concentration ofthe fruit we harvested. The quality of our fruit is a testament to the diligence and attention to detail of our vineyard team, who had their work cut out for them in a vintage that was, at times, wildly variable and marked by lingering drought and some unseasonable and sustained periods of high temperatures. These same elements that challenged our vineyard teams also created an ideal environment for our vines to produce low yields of small, intensely flavoured berries that achieved peak ripeness and marked complexity. In crafting our 2021 wines, we aimed to showcase the balance of power and poise that we feel will be the hallmarks of the vintage.

Vineyard Notes

First planted in 1868 by viticultural and winemaking icon Hamilton Crabb, To Kalon Vineyard has long been regarded as the source of Napa Valley's finest Cabernet Sauvignon. Within the prime vineyard blocks, an alluvial fan provides excellent and varied mineral deposits and the rich soils are filled with marine sediment that gives our wines their distinctive profiles. Great wines start with great vineyards and a great winemaker. For nearly two decades, we have researched, trialed, and procured what we feel are the finest vineyard sites for producing benchmark Cabernets in the Napa Valley.

Awards & Accolades

96–98 Pts. "Ripe black fruits, graphite, chalky minerality, and scorched earth define the aromatics, and it's full-bodied, concentrated, and structured. It's seriously good but is going to demand bottle age."
— Jeb Dunnuck, February 2023

97 Pts. "An exotic version, offering a dense, gushing wave of blackberry, fig and black currant compote flavours laced liberally with menthol, alder, sweet tobacco and savoury notes. Shows both lush and burly aspects, with a long finish that melds its fruit and savoury sides and frames them in a mouthwatering bittersweet cocoa detail. Best from 2025 through 2045. "
